Worms and Bees

Worms, along with bees, are probably the two most important creatures on the planet. Without their work in the earth and the air, plant life would struggle to exist, and gardening as we know it would be almost impossible.

I had this surprising thought as I started to write a page about the importance of worms…Worms and bees are partners in the essential business of keeping plant life growing on this planet, one working below ground whilst the other works above.

It’s quite an odd thought because worms and bees are so different. Bees love the sun, fly around above ground. They mostly live in quite complex communities that involve co operation and communication. Worms on the other hand avoid sunlight, live deep underground, and lead fairly solitary lives as far as we can understand.
